Is cover art needed for a digital book?

I noticed some authors do this and some do not. Many seem to stick to just font covers with the title, a short introduction or catchy sentence, and a few colors to make it stand out more. I don't see too many digital-only books using full cover art illustrations. I am wondering now if this is something you need to do or not.

It depends on the target reader. For light novels, full 2D anime covers would be ideal. I use full cover designs. Literature might not need it.

I do recommend a cover design to suit the target reader.

That is a good point. I guess if your purpose is the tell a story, you still want some kind of illustration on the cover to pull readers in but if it is something that is more about teaching or discussing things, words make sense to be okay.

I think a cover art is always a nice touch, gives the reader something to imagine when choosing a book
